COPPER NICKEL ALLOY WIRE
Nickel copper alloy, sometimes called Cupronickel is basically an alloy of copper which contains nickel and other strengthening materials such as iron and manganese. Because of its fantastic electrode potential, this alloy is used for sea water installations and machines.
Nickel wire and nickel alloy are now broadly utilized in manufacturing underwater piping, heat exchangers and condensers for shipping industry. Nickel Copper alloy is highly resistant to corrosion, which is the main reason for metal decay under sea water. As its electrode potential is adjusted to be neutral with regards to the sea water, this alloy can be safely used for those machines and instruments which are used under sea.
Copper-nickel alloy wire have high resistance to sea water environments. There are two common alloys, containing nominally 10% and 30% of nickel. The 10%
nickel alloy wire is the most widely used for sea water handling service.
Copper-nickel is an established alloy for many of the world's navies. The 90/10 Nickel Copper Alloy Wire and 70/30 Nickel Copper Alloy Wire/cupronickel alloy wire both have excellent resistance to bio-fouling and corrosion in sea-water with some variations in the performance of the alloys under different conditions. The 90/10 alloy wire has better bio-fouling resistance. If water velocity is accelerated above 1 m/sec, any slight bio-fouling on metal with good fouling resistance will be easily detached and swept away. On a material that does not have this good fouling resistance, strongly adherent, marine organisms would continue to thrive and multiply.
The excellent corrosion resistance of 70/30
Nickel Copper Alloy Wire and 90/10 copper nickel alloy wire makes them the best choice in Marine situation applications
. Some materials with apparently better corrosion resistance may have disadvantages such as lack of resistance to bio-fouling, lack of availability in the forms required, or susceptibility to crevice corrosion. They may also be more expensive and therefore less cost-effective over the required service lifetime.
