Heat processing and fabrication of Inconel 718 Wire

Inconel 718 alloy produced in the wire and strip form is a large potential wire and resistance to corrosion. Basically consisting of nickel and chromium material, inconel wire is utilized to perform under widely variable temperature ranges from -423oF to 1300oF. It is specified as age hardenable alloy that can easily be folded in the complicated forms. The wire shows extensive resistance to weld cracking and possesses suitable welding features.

The convenient and cost effective formation of inconel 718 wire paired with the superior tensile strength, fatigue creep and resistance to cracking make this wire usable in the significant operations. For instance the wire is used in the liquid fuel spacecrafts, casings and different metallic components of aircrafts and engines of turbines. Inconel is also used in making fasteners and components of instruments.

Chemically, the inconel 718 wire is comprised of various elements in different concentrations such nickel 50 to 55 %, chromium 17 to 21%, Iron bal., Niobium 4.75 to 5.50 %, Molybdenum 2.80 to 3.30 %, Titanium 0.65 to 1.15 %, Aluminum 0.20 to 0.80 %, Cobalt 1.00 %, Carbon 0.08 %, Manganese 0.35 %, Silicon 0.35 %, Phosphorus 0.015 %, Sulfur 0.015%, Boron 0.006 % and copper 0.30 %.

The values of properties in the above table vary negligibly on the base of composition and atmosphere in which the material wire is analyzed. So these are not recommended for measurement purpose.

Heating and mechanical characteristics of Inconel 718 Wire

In the majority of applications the inconel 718 alloy is introduced as the annealed and precipitated hardened solution. The alloy is hardened by its precipitation of secondary forms like gamma prime and twice times gamma prime in the metal solution. The precipitated Ni, Al, Ti, No forms are induced with the heat processing at the temperature between 1100 to 1500°F. To accomplish the metallurgical process the aging components like Al, Ti and No are present in the solution. If they get precipitated in the unknown phase these do not result in the desired precipitate and the complete potential of the Inconel 718 Wire alloy can not be recognized.

In order to get the desired precipitation of wire the, inconel is initially heat processed. For this, two kinds of heat processing methods are used. First the solution is heated at the 1700-1850oF then cooled immediately in water and precipitated hardening is done at 1325oF. The material is kept for eight hours and furnace cooled at the 1150°F and retained at 1150oF. The entire aging period is 18 hours by the air chilled.

In the second process the solution is heated at 1900 to 1950oF, then quickly cooled in the water and precipitation hardened at 1400oF for ten hours. The furnace cooling is made at 1200oF and retained at this temperature for twenty hours with the air cooling. Afterwards, if the alloy is required to be machined, it is primarily annealed. Then inconel 718 wire is finally fabricated in the complete malleable environment. Then it is heat processed to meet the certain application requirement.
