Inconel 617 alloy- Resistance to Oxidation and Carburization

The inconel 617 resistance wire is typically constituted of nickel, chromium and aluminum that offer higher grade of resistance to oxidation and carburization at the elevated temperature environments. In addition of this, the concentration of molybdenum also increases the alloy's capability to resist the diverse types of moisture conditions.

The alloy 617 resists the cyclic oxidation at temperature limits of 2000oF or 1095oC. The analysis were made on the test materials of thin strip comprising of exposure cycles for fifteen minutes in the higher temperatures subsequently air cooled for five minutes. The consequences of this analysis show the capability of metal to produce the security layer of oxide and maintain it in the hard thermal cycling. The test material of thin strip was kept for 50 hours cycles with the weight loss concluded in the every round. The tremendous resistance of inconel 617 wire to oxidation is provided by the concentrations of chromium and aluminum. At high temperatures, these contents produce thin layer of oxide. The oxide layer starts forming when the alloy is kept in the high temperature and it forms continually until its thickness becomes 0.025mm to 0.05mm. The oxide layer provides the complete diffusion conditions to make the secure chromium oxide on the alloy's surface. It also avoids spalling of the security layer.

The alloy 617 offers superior resistance to carburization. In the below table the resistance to carburization is compared with the alloys in the carburizing conditions at temperatures up to 2000oF or 1095oC.

Apart of this, inconel 617 wire has extremely high warm formability though it needs high stress due to its inherent potential at the high temperatures. Normally the warm formation features of inconel 617 alloy are equivalent with the inconel 625. The temperature limit for the massive formation is 1850oF to 2200oF or 1010oC to 1205oC. The ordinary treatment is made at temperature conditions below to 1700oF or 925oC

Also inconel 617 wire offers stupendous fabric ability. The formation process, machining and welding are made by following the standard processes for nickel combinations.

The procedures and devices for particular operations may have impact due to potential of inconel and work toughening rate. The inconel 617 alloy is easily cold produced by following the traditional methods irrespective of its large work toughening rate. To achieve the best results, it should be cold formed in the good graining condition. The annealing for the cold forming is made at temperature of 1900oF or 1040oC.
