Various Nickel compounds for electroplating and uses
There are few nickel compounds have significant applications. Most of these compounds are used for electroplating. These compounds are significantly used for making nickel. And the remaining are used in the form of coloring agents such as nickel dimethylglyoxime described as (C8H14N4NiO4) is a popular coloring agent used in the paints, cosmetics and particular types of plastics.
Few nickel compounds are used in the extraordinary applications such as the nickel dibutyldithiocarbamate represented as (Ni[CS2N(C4H4)2]2) is an antioxidant agent used in the tires. The tire rubber easily reacts with oxygen in the presence of air. Upon reacting with oxygen the rubber gets tough and loses its flexibility and the tires goes wear and tear. To avoid this, nickel dibutyldithiocarbamate, an additive agent that reduces the rate of this oxidation reaction, thus extending the life of tires.
In order to resist corrosion of expensive metals the nickel sheet is used for electroplating to extend the life of the metal and increases its performance quality. In order to electroplate the nickel, initially the nickel compound is dissolved in the water. The dissolved solution obtained can be nickel chloride shown as NiCl2 or nickel nitrate shown as Ni(NO3)2 or other compound of nickel.
The metal sheet on which electroplating is required is kept in the solution. For example steel that is placed in the solution of nickel nitrate or nickel chloride or other solution. Then current is supplied to the solution that causes dissociation of nickel compound and the pure nickel starts accumulating on the metal sheet. The amount of nickel accumulated on the sheet is directly proportion to the time for which the current is passed through the solution. The nickel thickness can be controlled by limiting the time for which the current passes through the solution.
The electroplating is used to produce the metallic products with certain features. For example steel is a sturdy though it is very sensitive to corrosion. The nickel resistance wire doesn't respond to current easily. Therefore it is used to cover the steel to protect it from corrosion.
Besides of enormous advantages of nickel metal, it causes health issues in the individuals. The common health issue is allergy due to nickel. Nickel allergy is more active in few types of individuals than the others.People with sensitive skin to nickel get skin rashes when their skin is exposed to nickel. These rashes convert into itches and worse into water blisters. Once the nickel allergy is produced in the human body it remains for lifetime.
The nickel wire is used in making variety of products. Therefore it is very easy to come in contact of nickel to cause nickel allergy. Expectedly the body penetration is the common type of nickel allergy. People use to pierce their ears to wear earrings, even others pierce their lips, nose and other parts of body. The cheap jewelry like steel is placed in the pierced body. As the stainless steel consists of nickel, thereby the nickel easily causes allergy. Even long time contact to nickel causes damage of body cells that leads to cancer.
