Resistivity value of Nichrome

The resistivity of a material determines its potential to resist the supply of current. The good electrical conductors are those have lower value of resistivity whereas the good insulators possess very large value of resistivty. In the chemistry world nichrome resistance wire has the extremely high resistance value. The resistivity is denoted by rho (ρ) and it is determined by :

R = ρl/A

Here ρ represents the value of resistivity of wire, R represents the resistance, L represents the length of wire and A represents the cross sectional area. The unit of resistivity is ohm-meters (Ωm).

The nichrome wire shows no deflection in the magnetic field and it consists of 80% nickel and 20% chromium and it offers resistivity between 1.10 × 10^-6 Ωm to 1.50 × 10^-6 Ωm (0.00000110 Ωm to 0.00000150 Ωm)and extremely large boiling point of about 1400 °C. Comprising of low resistivty and large boiling point the nichrome wire has good conductivity and suitable material to manufacture wires and insulation equipments. The nichrome wire is wound up to form coils and utilized in the heating elements like hair dryers, toasters and ovens. Normally the nichrome wires are not utilized in the excessive amount just like copper wires because it contains the chromium metal that is very expensive.
