Crucial Applications of Nickel

The name of the nickel is believed to be the short version of kupfernickel that means copper of Old Nick. The nickel was found by Axel Fredrik niccolite, a chemist in Swedish in 1751. He noticed the traces of nickel in the mineral niccolite. The niccolite is constituted of nickel arsenide and denoted NIAs. The nickel arsenide constitutes of 56.1% arsenic and 43.9% nickel. The crystals of nickel arsenide are found in hexagonal shape and show pale copper red shade incorporated with metallic shine on its upper layer. Nickel is introduced in the industrial scale in the form of nickel wire, nickel bar, nickel rod and others.

Nickel is actually a chemical element having 28 atomic number and atomic weight of 58.69. It is ranked as 24^th element that is found in the large amount on the earth. Nickel is found in the nature in the mixed form such as a combined with oxygen, sulfur, oxide or sulfide. It is present in 6% on the core of earth. The electronic configuration of nickel is 1s²2s²2p⁶3s²3p⁶3d⁸4s². It is present in the 4^th period and 10^th group of periodic table.

There is no specific group recognized for nickel but it is categorized as transition metal like cobalt and ferrous. Nickel shows silvery white color gives brightness if polished. It is tough, ductile and malleable metal therefore it is used to make nickel sheet and other products. This metal also exhibits ferromagnetic features and it shows refined heat and electrical conductivity. The melting point of nickel is 2732⁰C and it is introduced in five stable and nine unstable isotopes of nickel.
