Monel is an alloy which is formed with a combination of two or more elements in which one is a metal and the resultant material has metallic properties. It is a combination of various metals like nickel (65-70%), copper (20-29%) and iron and magnesium (5%) and other compounds.
There are many commercial types of Monel like Alloy 400, Alloy 401, Alloy R-405, Alloy 450, Alloy K-500, Monel 404 Copper-Nickel Alloy. The standard product forms of Monel are round, hexagon, flats, forging stock, pipe, tube, plate, sheet, strip, and wire.
Monel exhibits various characteristics like-
1. Highly resistant to corrosion. Monel is well known as a corrosion strong, rust-resistant material. It is resistant to corrosion and acids, and some alloys can withstand a fire in pure oxygen.
2. Stronger than steel
3. Malleable
4. Low coefficient of thermal expansion
5. Highly resistant to alkalis
6. It can be welded, brazed and soldered.
7. Good ductility.
Market applications of Monel-
Monel is used for marine engineering, chemical and hydrocarbon processing equipment, valves, pumps, shafts, fittings, fasteners, and heat exchangers. It is also used as part of metal instruments and frames of eyeglasses.
Uses of Monel-
Monel is used for various purposes like valve stems, springs, heat exchangers, screw machine products, wind instruments, bass strings, piping systems, trolling wire, fuel and water tanks and drill collars. It is used in kitchen sinks, eyeglass frames, clock parts, doo knobs and roofing.
